In the coming few weeks I will be posting a full and detailed guide for installing Oracle VM Templates on Oracle Linux. I was inspired by Jim Marions blog about running OVM Templates on OL (Part 1 and Part 2). I was very surprised with how much ease and little time you can set up a fully configured environment. This is perfect for creating your own sandbox. This guide will be based on his tutorial on how to install and run the templates, but I will be giving you a step by step detailed guide.
Index of my blog series.
- Prerequisites before starting the guide.
- Installing Virtualbox and Converting the OVM Templates.
- Installing Oracle Linux for OVM. (Based on this blog from Hakan Biroglu)
- Installing and configurating the HCM database.
- Installing and configuring PeopleTools. (application server, web server and process scheduler)
- Installing and configuring PeopleTools on your windows client.
We will start the guide with this blog. I will provide you with all the necessary links we need before starting the installation. I am running the virtual machines on a minimum of 2GB each machine, so make sure you have enough memory on your pc. When using less then 2GB, performance of the Virtual Machine might not be optimal.
First, we will need to download Virtualbox 4.1.18. This will be used to set up our virtual environment. Next, we will need to download some files from Oracle E-Delivery. We need to download Oracle Linux 5.8, Peoplesoft HCM 9.1, and PeopleTools 8.52.06. Finally we need to download the PeopleTools Client only for windows 64-bit. (we will use this later on, to use application designer and data mover from a windows client).
See the list below;
- Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 8 for x86_64 (64 Bit).
- PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack #2 Database with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64 bit) (part 1 of 2).
- PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 Feature Pack #2 Database with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64 bit) (part 2 of 2).
- PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52.06 (PIA-AppBatch) with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64 bit) (part 1 of 3).
- PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52.06 (PIA-AppBatch) with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64 bit) (part 2 of 3).
- PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52.06 (PIA-AppBatch) with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64 bit) (part 3 of 3).
- PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.52 Client Only.
In the next blog we will be Installing Virtualbox and Converting the OVM Templates. Have fun!

Hey,
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the blog posts. In the meantime, just a small note: the product is just called Oracle Linux (OL). We dropped the word “Enterprise” out of it a few years ago now. :)
Thanks,
Avi

Ok I have used the blog and I have been ‘almost succesfull’ I have created the oracle database. I am at the step in the ‘Converting the PeopleTools OVM Template to VirtualBox” I believe I have folled all the instructions to the ‘Tee’
I got to the step where I am running the ‘./oraclevm-template.sh’
I reached a poing where I get asked whether “I am happy with my answers” ? I answer Yes! I get the message “unable” then the ff message ”
Do you wish to setup PeopleSoft Application Server on this VM [y|n]: y
CreateVirtualEnvironment
Enter the name of the database [TESTDB]:FSCM
Enter the hostname for the database server [fscmpt91.example.com]:fscmdb91
Enter the port number for the database host [1521]:
Are you happy with your answers [y|n] : y
ERROR: Unable
You have chosen to configure a Decoupled Application Home.
Decoupled Application Home is configured on the VM by mounting the remote directory where the Application VCD is installed. Administrators
will install the Application VCD typically on a File Server. You will be
prompted to provide the full path of the remote directory including the
mount point where the Application VCD is installed. For example:
rtdc1008nap:/vol/apps/HR91.
Enter the full path of the remote Application Home directory:
Now can anybody tell me why this question about full path of the remote Application Home directory.???
My database is mounted and opened with SID=FSCM and the Database Machine is up and running
