What will 2010 bring for Oracle Applications?

The end of this turbulent year is coming soon. The year where Oracle delivered new versions of their business applications. PeopleTools 8.50 and PeopleSoft 9.1 have been released. On this year’s Oracle Open World Larry Ellison announced the first version of Fusion Applications. What can we expect in 2010 from Oracle Applications?

Fusion Applications

Oracle announced this year that the first release of Fusion Applications will be delivered in 2010. My expectation is that Oracle will release this totally new applications suite. Fusion Applications is build on Fusion Middleware which brings more flexibility and usability to business applications. There are still questions coming to my mind; which modules/processes will be in scope for v1? What is going to happen with localizations? How will the upgrade paths look like from our current applications? How easy can we use Fusion Apps modules/processes together with our current applications? Let’s see in 2010 what the answerers to these questions are.

PeopleSoft

This year Oracle released new versions of PeopleSoft (8.50) and Applications (9.1). Will customers start upgrading to 9.1 in 2010? If customers follow Gartner they will wait. My opinion is that the evolution steps between the PeopleSoft versions aren’t that big. Loads of fixes, patches, bundles and maintenance packs from previous versions have been included in this new release. Big functional changes haven’t been made in 9.1. The risk between upgrading to 9.0 or upgrading to 9.1 isn’t that big. If your customers are multilanguage users, you might want to consider the upgrade to 9.1 as it is unclear when the language pack will become available.

It will be an exciting year. Fusion Apps will be released and customers will start (planning) their upgrades to the newest applications releases. I’m looking forward to 2010. I wish you all the best in 2010!
